Welcome to another blog series brought to you by Cuenye Consultants. We thank you for taking this journey right along with us as we learn more about what the science of reading is. The information presented here is to further teacher content knowledge on the reading brain in order to strengthen their teacher practice in addition to informing parents about what is needed to ensure reading success for their little ones.

The science of reading is a vast, interdisciplinary body of scientifically-based research about reading and issues related to reading and writing. (The Reading League)

We left off learning about the four processors in the brain and the role they play in understanding and decoding words in text. Today we briefly discuss the simple view of reading, also known as SVR.

SVR is a formula created by Gough and Tunmer in 1986. It shows that decoding and language comprehension are separate but necessary skills for Reading Comprehension.

  1. Decoding is the ability to apply sound-symbol correspondence to read words.

  2. Language Comprehension is the ability to understand spoken language.

  3. Reading Comprehension is skilled reading that involves the two above two skills.

RC= D x LC

  1. When Decoding and Language Comprehension are both strong, strong reading comprehension will be achieved. For example, if D= 100% and LC= 100%, then RC is 100%.

  2. When one variable is strong, RC will be equal to the weaker variable. For example if Decoding is 100% and Language Comprehension is 50%, then Reading Comprehension equals 50%

  3. When neither variable is strong, RC will be lower than either of the variables. For example if both D and LC is 75%, RC will be 56%.

Why is this important? If you notice your child is experiencing difficulty in one of these skills, this formula helps you understand why word recognition AND language comprehension is important for a child's reading success.
