This short blurb is to inform families on how they can search the certifications and status of their child's teachers, school building leaders, district leaders and many more. If you are a teacher or school building leader certified in New York State your information is public. As a parent you may be thinking that the teacher your child is assigned to has experience in the grade they teach but at times that may not be the case. There are teachers who work outside of their license. When this happens it makes the tenure process a bit difficult (since one can only obtain tenure in the license they are technically certified in).
To check the certification status of your child's teacher and other school service providers, follow these steps:
Visit the New York State Department of Education Teaching Initiative's web-page:
2. Type in the first and last name of the teacher. If you do not know the first name of your child's teacher look at registration paperwork, call the school or login to your child's schools account.
3. Click on the name you are looking for. Look closely to the type of certificate the teacher has and the date it was issued. If you notice discrepancies in the certificate your child's teacher possesses compared to what they are actually teaching do not hesitate to reach out to the teacher or school building leader and inquire. It is your right and responsibility.
